Thousands of athletes, joggers and fun runners are currently in
training for the 13.1 mile race around the streets of Peterborough
in what is the greatest road race in the region. However, if the
half-marathon seems like a tall order, people can still be part of
this fantastic event by taking part in the 5km fun run.
It is the ideal opportunity for
people of all ages to run or walk the 5km course and enjoy what is a
fun-filled family day. Many participants choose to complete the
course in fancy dress, adding a splash of colour to proceedings, and
many more raise thousands of pounds for charity. In addition, there
is the obvious health benefits involved in taking part in the fun
run. However, whatever the motivation for signing up to the 5km fun
run, it is guaranteed to be an experience to savour.
“After a 10-year absence it was
fantastic to see so many people taking part in the Great Eastern Run
and the 5km fun run last year,” said Councillor Matthew Lee,
Peterborough City Council’s Cabinet member for Community Services.
“Our aim is to make the race an annual highlight in the region’s
sporting calendar, attracting local, national and international
athletes.
“However, it is just as important we
attract local residents of all abilities and, if the half-marathon
is too long a distance to tackle, the 5km fun run provides people
with the perfect alternative. It is the ideal opportunity to raise
vital funds for charity, take place in the greatest race in the
region and make Sunday 14 October a fun-filled family day to
remember.”
The Great Eastern Run has grown with
the backing of its main sponsor Perkins Engines and others,
including Advance Performance, ASICS UK Ltd and Anglian Water. It
has also benefited from the enthusiasm of local running clubs,
giving the sport the support it deserves as well as helping runners
of all abilities.
People can find out more about the
race and running for charity at a series of special roadshows
happening this month. The Great Eastern Run roadshows will take
place in the city centre between 10 am and 4 pm every Saturday from
8 September.
