In a poll of Runners World readers the Great Eastern Run achieved a
top 50 rating out of 736 races across the UK in 2007.
“Now that the race is becoming more
established in Peterborough we anticipate increasing numbers of
participants as we aim to make it the biggest event of its kind in
the region,” said organiser Kathleen McGrath. “We are working very
hard to enhance its reputation as an important attraction for
athletes and fun-runners on the national calendar of sporting
events.”
Peterborough-based Perkins Engines
will again be the principal sponsor. Marion King, the company’s
marketing communications manager said: “Perkins is absolutely
delighted to once again be the principal sponsor of the Great
Eastern Run.
“Last year’s event was superb with
an incredible level of support and enthusiasm from both the runners
and the crowds who turned up to watch. We are looking forward to
being part of the team, working to inspire more people to take part
and to guarantee this year’s event will be even more successful than
last year’s.”
Elenor Millward, a member of the
fundraising team at Sue Ryder Care’s Thorpe Hall Hospice, added:
"The Thorpe Hall Hospice has really enjoyed being part of the Great
Eastern Run for the past two years and we are looking forward to the
2008 race. The atmosphere is great and it is such a fun day.
“It is a great opportunity for local
people get fit while also raising money for local charities. The
runners supporting Sue Ryder Care Thorpe Hall Hospice last year
raised more than £15,000 for patient care, which is fantastic and
will make a really positive difference to people in our care.
“I am really grateful to the runners
who have helped us continue providing outstanding care to local
people who are seriously ill with conditions such as cancer and
enabled us to give support to their families and friends at a
difficult time.
“It is a wonderful achievement to
have completed a half-marathon or fun run and raising money as well
adds to a real sense of satisfaction and pride.”

Councillor Matthew Lee, Cabinet
Member for Community Services at the city council, said: “The Great
Eastern Run has raised the profile of Peterborough and provided a
fitting stage for those elite athletes, club runners, keep-fit
joggers and fun runners who have helped make it the greatest race in
the region. I hope together we can continue to build on its
undoubted success.”
