Central Library celebration of local writing talent

Lifestyle | Article

Peterborough City Council's Central Library is inviting budding poets and other writers to come along to a special 'Word Play' event (like 'swordplay' without the 's') to test their rapier wits as part of a celebration of local writing talent.

The event will kick off with a Poetry Party from 11 am until 12.30 pm on Sunday 20 July. Whether you are new to poetry or a seasoned old hand you can share your work, inspire others and be thoroughly inspired by the poetry games and challenges and the contributions of other poets.

From 1 pm the library will host the official launch of local author Michael Alexander's latest book 'Until Wishes are Fulfilled Part 2'.

Until Wishes Are FulFulled II

Last year, many library members and other young people across the city entered a competition to design the book cover, so it will be a good opportunity to see the winning design in all its glory and most importantly, to meet the author. On the day, Michael will be reading some extracts of the book and selling and signing copies.

At 1.30 pm the library will be launching its young writers group the group is for secondary school age students and aims to offer support, advice and encouragement to young people who love writing. Following its launch, the group will meet on a monthly basis on a Sunday afternoon.

The meetings will mainly take place at Central Library, but the library service is hoping to be able to offer different venues periodically, to help inspire and nurture young talent across the city. Parents of young people interested in joining the young writers group are encouraged to stay for this first session, to discuss future arrangements and to speak to library staff members who can offer support and advice. The first session of the young writers group is set to finish by 3.30 pm on Sunday 20 July.

The city council is supporting the National Year of Reading and this event is just one of many aimed at bringing literature to life. The National Year of Reading aims to change the culture of reading in Britain forever by creating and encouraging life-long reading for pleasure.

This year, libraries, schools, community groups and local businesses will be working in partnership to support reading in every section of the community.
