The course takes place each week on Monday evenings from 7.30
pm to 9.30 pm, starting on Monday (5 November) and running for six
weeks.
It is being led by local history
speaker Don Chiswell, who will look at the arrival of the Saxons in
Britain after the Romans left; the establishment of the Saxon
kingdoms; daily life in the Saxon period; the coming of the Danes
and Alfred the Great; Saxon culture; and will conclude with a look
at the events leading up to the Norman conquest in 1066.
The course will also include
elements on local history and how the Saxons changed Peterborough.
“The Saxons had a huge impact on
Peterborough,” said Stuart Orme, museum visitor services and
marketing manager for Peterborough City Council.
“They founded the abbey, which is
today Peterborough Cathedral, so perhaps one could say without them
we would not be here. We tend to think of this period as being the
Dark Ages, but in fact these people had a rich and fascinating
culture.”
