Team trains for Special Olympics Swimming Gala

Lifestyle | Article

An eight-person team from Peterborough will participate in a ‘Special Olympics’ regional swimming gala in Hatfield on Saturday 26 April.

The Special Olympics differs from the Paralympics as it offers children and adults with learning disabilities, rather than physical disabilities, year-round training and competitions.

The Special Olympics is dedicated to empowering individuals with learning disabilities to become physically fit, productive and respected members of society through sports training and competition.

The team is drawn from a group of people, aged from eight years upwards, that trains each Friday at Jack Hunt swimming pool from 7.30 pm to 9 pm. Competition criteria are inclusive and are set according to the ability of swimmers rather than their age.

“The weekly swimming sessions and participation in this gala provide an opportunity to enjoy healthy positive activities,” said Peterborough City Council’s development officer for disability sports, Amee Garala. “It promotes the principles of the Special Olympics oath: ‘Let me win but if I cannot win let me be brave in the attempt’.”

Julie Orr, chairman of Peterborough Special Olympics Swimming Club, added: “The swimmers have made fantastic progress and now we are seeking sponsorship and other support so that our swimmers can wear distinctive T-shirts and receive help with their transport costs.”

To find out more about the club or to discuss sponsorship opportunities, contact Julie Orr – Telephone: (01733) 358665.
