Prospective students who had wished to study for A levels will now
need to change plans if the College go ahead with cuts in provision.
However Ed Murphy is asking that the decision is reconsidered and
students are consulted about future learning and skills provision in
Peterborough.
Ed commented,
“I have contacted the head of PRC and the Students Union to see what
can be done. The conservative councillors have recently shut too
many schools and we are heading for a shortage of places to study in
Peterborough. Where education and skills level are far to poor
already.
“The civic leaders need to wake up
and provide resources and leadership if we are going to improve the
situation - what about some direct action to get this on the agenda.
The views of students and young people should be listened to by the
authorities – last year I am told was a record year for the number
of students taking A ‘levels at PRC.
“Once again the less fortunate
students seem to take the hit in boro.... It is about time we looked
at PRC as an opportunity for improvements and a grown up place to
study as an alternative to Peterborough Schools. I have spoken with
the head of PRC and may contact the board and minister to check out
how we can make PRC grow better. Peterborough deserves and needs
decent Higher Education and that means a University to be proud off
and more opportunities at PRC.
Ed believes that PRC is following
the funding to some degree on this one (600k), but A levels are
going to lose status over the coming years and better qualifications
will be sought by students - PRC wants to have a reputation to be at
the cutting edge of this and secure £80 for new funding to develop
HE in Peterborough.
“I have asked that more is done to
make current A 'level students feel valued at PRC and have received
assurances that current studies will not be cut and I asked that the
future of A level provision is not curtailed straight away,”
he continued.
