Handyperson scheme offers vital help to needy residents

Disabled, elderly and vulnerable residents who need some help with small jobs and repairs around the home can continue to take advantage of the successful 'handyperson' scheme introduced by Peterborough City Council's care and repair team more than a year ago.

The scheme arranges for volunteers to help with a wide range of minor tasks, such as putting up shelves and curtain rails or small plumbing and electrical jobs.

However, volunteers are unable to help with any gardening or decorating jobs. The service is free of charge, although residents are expected to supply or pay for the materials used.

Edmund Wake, from Peterborough, was thrilled with handyperson scheme and recommended it to other eligible residents. He said: “I have used this service on several occasions and I have been more than happy with the help I have received. Unfortunately, I am unable to do these odd jobs around the house now due to my age and disability, therefore to be able to ring and request some assistance is very helpful. It is a first class service"

Tasks will be carried out by vetted contractors who are included on the care and repair list of approved contractors.

They will endeavour to carry out work within two weeks of the initial enquiry, but sometimes due to the volume of work it may take a little longer.
