The scam works by someone calling and claiming they are from the
security and fraud department at VISA. After giving their badge
number, they then tell them that their card has been flagged for an
unusual purchase.
The person who has received the call
will naturally respond by saying they have not purchased the item
and the caller will then say that they intend to credit their
account and they will be starting a fraud investigation.
In addition, they will say if the
person has any questions they should call the 0800 number on the
back of their card and ask for security. They will then ask for the
security numbers on the back of their card. Within minutes of this a
new purchase for nearly £500 will have been charged to their card.
Jane Day, senior adviser and
education officer at the city council, said: “Never give any
information regarding bank accounts or cards to anyone you do not
know. If you have any doubts regarding any contact you have received
by telephone or email from your bank, contact the bank directly
yourself.”
