The Conservatives are opposed in principle to early release, and at
the recent Party conference committed to ending the scheme by the
creation of emergency accommodation funded through savings from
scrapping the ID card scheme.
On hearing the figures, Stewart
commented: “This situation is frankly a disgrace.
“Because of its incompetence, this
Government is now allowing scores of criminals to pour on the
streets of Peterborough long in advance of the end of their
sentence.
“Ministers need to halt this policy
with immediate effect”.
