City MP writes to Minister over funding for local group

News | Community

City MP Stewart Jackson has this week written to Maria Eagle MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Justice urging her to consider reviewing the decision of her department to withdraw funding for the Peterborough Rape Crisis Counselling Group.

Stewart Jackson MP

Peterborough Rape Crisis Counselling Group works hard to ‘support and empower female survivors of rape and sexual abuse’ and had received £20,000 of the Victim Fund monies, for one year only, to have the use of a Development Worker and training for 15 new volunteers. This funding runs out in January 2008.

Therefore the group finds itself in a situation where is has no recognised funding available and is thus unable to continue its excellent work.

Stewart commented: “I have serious concerns about this situation and have therefore written to the Minister asking her to investigate this funding crisis.

“I hope she feels it appropriate to reconsider the plan to cease funding in January 2008”.

Stewart Jackson was elected in May 2005 to represent the Peterborough constituency in the House of Commons. To find out more about him, his views and activities, visit his website at www.stewartjackson.org.uk
