Jackson calls on council to help save local post offices

News | Community

City MP Stewart Jackson is asking Peterborough City Council to do their bit in helping to save local sub Post Offices threatened with closure.

Across Cambridgeshire, as many as 30 Post Offices face closure when the Post Office announces its proposals on July 8th.

Nationally, up to 2,500 Post Offices are set to close under government plans, debated last week in the House of Commons.

Since 2002, 6 out of 23 branch Post Offices have closed in the Peterborough constituency. Stewart Jackson has this week written to Cllr John Peach, Leader of the City Council, asking him to consider boosting the financial viability and long term future of some local Post Offices by encouraging “Council Counters” – so that the City Council could examine what services they could provide through Post Offices and whether they could use the Post Office network in their area to better engage with local residents.

Stewart Jackson said: “This is a great idea and I believe that the City Council will give it serious consideration. Local Post Offices are a vital community resource and some of them are in deprived areas.

“Any further closures will be a blow to the community and to the social fabric of our area.”
